THE 1808 CAMPAIGN AND ELECTION |
| ... |
.
from President Elect contributor Stuart Schimler: Charles Pinckney's campaign revolved around a few critiques the Federalists had against the Democratic-Republicans. He criticized them for the embargo act; it had a devastating impact on the economy, which he tried to use to get sympathy from the people and push himself into the White House. Also, the constant attacks on America by France and England were blamed on the Republicans - but to no avail. James Madison won the election but Federalists did gain some ground in the House of Representatives, however, not enough to get control. |
